Taipei , July7 , 2014 – Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704) Chief Executive Officer Eva Chen was invited as a panelist for the second annual FT-Standard Chartered Taiwan Economic Summit 2014, which was organized by Financial Time in Taipei on July 3. Joined by San-Cheng (Simon) Chang, Minister of Science and Technology of Taiwan, Franz Chen, founder of Franz collection, and Jason Hu, Mayor of Taichung city, Taiwan, Eva Chen spoke in a panel discussion mainly focused on where Taiwan’s next brand story is. She points out that governments should be more supportive of students to study cross industry platforms.
Throughout the discussion, innovation and the power of creativity from the mind were extremely emphasized by all the speakers. In regard to this, Eva Chen mentions that the countries with less resources and smaller domestic markets are actually a great place to be an entrepreneur and its strong point is relied on its diminutive size. Instead of seeing this as a weakness, she stated that it forces people to think outside the box. “Without the box there is nowhere to think outside of," Chen said.
Although many believe that the opportunities and timing are coming to an end, Chen believes otherwise. From her point of view, now is the best timing for innovation and generation of entrepreneurship. Chen offered an example by using her company, Trend Micro. Even though it began as a company that offered Chinese localization for software, they soon recognized that this market only reaches to Chinese users. By transforming Trend Micro into a company that tracks down anti-viruses, it allows them to open the market and reach to all users of the world.
Chen also mentions that the most convenient place to recruit new engineers is from schools, however, she stresses that finding those who have experience and the passion to be innovative is extremely important. With these recruitment, she likes to lead and help these young engineers further develop their vision. Failed entrepreneurs are also great assets whom Eva would like to recruit. Because they have the courage, market experience, and the will to face challenges.
As a final point, Chen stated that she believes that in order to build successful business, there needs to be an ability to force creativity from those who are talented. The governments can do this by encouraging cross industry platforms for the talents, which will be the key factor to the growth of creativity and innovation.
